Botanical Incense: A Beginner Workshop with Local Materials
Sunday, August 23, 2:00–4:30pm
Learn the basics of making handmade incense with botanical materials, including locally gathered and garden-grown aromatics.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll explore the basic parts of incense — aromatic plants, resins, woods, binders, and burnable bases — and talk about how different ingredients affect scent, texture, and burn. We’ll smell and handle a range of materials, discuss ethical sourcing and simple ways to work with plants close to home, then take an experimental, laboratory-style approach to blending.
Together, we’ll mix small-batch incense blends and hand-form incense cones and a few test sticks. Each participant will leave with:
their own handmade incense
a small kit of materials to continue experimenting at home
a handcrafted ceramic incense holder made by me from locally dug clay
No previous experience is needed. This class is designed for curious beginners who want an approachable introduction to incense as a craft, scent practice, and way of working with local plants.
